Elam Sports O`ahu – Our Team

When I was in PT school, I began to think about how I might be able to best serve the people and communities that I grew up in…you know that old adage about giving back to your community, etc?  Anyway, my vision was to reach people by making PT services more accessible, and one way to do that was take the services to the people – mobile outpatient therapy!  Another way to provide service was to take it to more remote communities around our island home, in this case the Leeward Coast – hence our first clinic location in Kapolei.  Lastly, I wanted to be in a position to serve all O`ahu as THE best sports medicine practice on the island – the basis for the design of our Pearl City clinic!

Although these visions were implanted in my mind, I did not realize my dream until I had been back on O`ahu for one year, then a lot happened as if it was destined…I received a call from my father-in-law in August of 1999, asking me to come to the house and provide therapy on an “in-home” basis…”Sure, no problem”…but he said he wanted to make sure I’d get reimbursed for services rendered…”No, Dad, you’re family”…”I insist!”…”Okay, but I’ll need to get a prescription from your physician and approval from your insurance company.”  Thus began the fulfillment of a dream…

The basis for our company name emanates from all that is good about life, love and “aloha.”  Elam = FAMILY, Sports = PASSION, O`ahu = HOME…I believe my father, Frank Elam, was the first Elam in Hawai`i coming here via the U.S. Army in 1936.  He met my mom, Irene (Kaneshiro), a Lahina, Maui native, and they married in 1939…Ohana is an important part of our lives and is a big reason for being here. My mom and dad instilled in me a love for sports at an early age and I tried to pass this on to my children as well…Active families engaged in sporting activities stay healthy together and remain united in purpose – witness the fact that three Elams over the last three decades have represented the University of Hawai`i in football – Reid, Jason and Matt (Kaleo)…Go ‘Bows! O`ahu is my birthplace.  It is the birthplace of my wife, Susan (Kamoalii Cummings), and my children.  O`ahu is our family’s home and will always be home for the Elams.

As Elams, we are committed to serving others.  We do this first, trying to emulate a Christ-like behavior in all our dealings, personal and social.  Secondly, it is to spread our own version of “Aloha” by providing a service to our island’s people, in particular our “Kupuna” for without them we would have no heritage or sense of being.  Also, health promotion is facilitated by our passion for sports – activity, recreational opportunity and camaraderie – which all lend to our patient community being treated as TEAM members or ohana.  Third…we wish to be “O`ahu‘s own”…family serving family…thus our tagline:  “Providing extraordinary therapeutic care and rehabilitative services for O`ahu‘s active families.”
